Up to the end of the 19th century the Lowveld was generally regarded as inhospitable to human settlement. Malaria and the dreaded Tsetse-fly took their toll on both man and animal and deterred immigration into the area. 

Fortunately things have changed - Malaria has for the most part been contained, and the Tsetse-fly eradicated. However, parts of this region are still affected by Malaria. While not nearly as dangerous as in the past, it is advisable that visitors check up on Malaria and other Travel Health information. 

Of far greater contemporary concern, however,  is the HIV/AIDS pandemic which has spread through the whole of South Africa - a problem which still does not have any conclusive solution.
